A political scientist with the University of Ghana says the best logo to represent the Electoral Commission is one that has the coat of arms.
Dr Ransford Gyampo told Joy News part of the reasons given by the EC Chair Charlotte Osei for the change in logo was unsustainable.
His comments come shortly after the EC officially launched its new controversial logo, Tuesday.
The Electoral Commission Chair offered explanations for what the symbols stood for and why the Commission decided to design a new logo.
She told a section of the media the EC is free to assert its rights under the law by being creative with a new logo.
The round looking logo with the colours blue green yellow and white has generated more controversy ever since it was introduced.
With a similar logo already in circulation, there were claims the EC had plagiarized the new logo.
But at the launching ceremony Mrs Charlotte Osei said there were discernible differences between the logos.
"We don’t feel we have plagiarized their logo”. “I don’t think it looks like mine. I like mine better”, the Chairperson continued.
Charlotte Osei also rejected suggestions the EC should have publicly invited graphic designers to submit designs before settling on one logo.
“It is not just about putting colours together…a logo is not just an artistic competition,” she maintained.
She argued further that the coat of arms in the previous logo was not necessary because the EC dID not represent the authority of the state.
She said the new logo will represent the new vision, values and essence of the Commission.
That is our new logo, we like it; we picked it; it makes us happy.
Explaining why the old logo was done away with, the EC chair said
"We removed the coat of arms because we do not represent the authority of the state. And we are more than the ballot box; our mandate is beyond the ballot box. The coat of arms does not speak to the independence, legal and functional of the EC," she said.
But speaking to Joy News Dr Ransford Gyampo said the timing for the logo is wrong and a misplaced priority.
"This is not the time to have a new logo," he said, but believes it is now a done deal because the EC has started using the new logo.
He also hinted the EC chair made a mistake in suggesting the EC and coat of arms did not represent the authority of the state.
"The best logo is the coat of arms; no logo represents the authority, legitimacy of nationhood more than coat of arms," he said.
He argued the EC is an independent entity of the state and coat of arms represents it "better than what is being bandied about."
