Assistant Executive Director of governance think tank, Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), has backed the Electoral Commission’s decision to rebrand to a new logo, despite fierce public criticisms over the move.
Dr Kwesi Jonah says after listening to the explanation proferred by the EC Chair, Charlotte Osei, for the change of the logo, he finds it difficult understand the critics.
“The meaning behind the new logo is very good, you see the stars pointing inwards, meaning inclusiveness, with the colours of Ghana reflecting. The explanation behind the new logo is very good,” Kwesi Jonah said on a special edition of PM Express news analysis programme.
The current affairs TV programme came off at the Best Western Premier Hotel in Accra on Tuesday April 26, 2016 shortly after the EC held a public event to unveil a 5-year strategic plan and the new logo.
Concerns by critics over the adoption of the new logo range from plagiarism to the view that it lacked aesthetic appeal.
However, the EC stuck to its ground, insisting the logo was to demonstrate its independence.
“Before today’s launch everybody was saying the EC has gone to steal a logo from Turkey and they are going to be charged with plagiarism and so on and so forth [but] from the way the chair of the EC explained the logo, they had to take off the coat of arms of Ghana in order to reinforce the independence of the EC,” Kwesi Jonah said, mesmerised by the EC Chair’s explanation at the event.
He told show host, Nana Ansah Kwao IV, that those who heard the explanation yesterday are likely to change their minds.
