The Electoral Commission will continue with its conduct of Unit Committee and District Assembly elections around the country today. The exercise has suffered postponements in a number of regions because of the unavailability of ballot papers. There have been reports of low turnout with some describing the entire poll as a failure. EC officials have so far rejected calls for the exercise to be postponed to next year to allow them enough time to adequately prepare. Its Director of Public Affairs Christian Owusu-Parry told Joy News postponement is not an option because that will be against the law. He said the Northern and Greater Accra regions – albeit some districts – will be voting. EC officials in the Central region have also assured the elections will go on in 167 of the over 500 electoral areas left out on Tuesday because of the lack of ballot papers. The officers say enough publicity has been done to ensure a good turnout. Deputy Local Government Minister, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, is meanwhile backing calls for the decentralization of the printing of ballots for the elections as suggested by the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana, NALAG. That he said was necessary to avoid the current frustrations bedeviling the elections process. Meanwhile an aspirant in the Yilo Krobo district is asking the EC to disqualify a colleague whose name appeared twice in separate voter registers. But the District Officer for Yilo Krobo, Patience Badu tells Joy News even though it has been confirmed that Stanley Doku registered twice, there is little the EC can do. She wants the police to act on the complaint because it is a criminal offence. Source: Joy News/Ghana
