Director of Elections for the Movement for Change, Nana Ohene Ntow, has praised the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, for his exceptional security arrangements during the December 7 polls.
According to him, the IGP’s comprehensive security strategy “saved the country a great deal” and prevented potential instability during the elections.
Speaking on TV3’s Key Points programme on Saturday, the associate of Alan Kyerematen noted that political parties were impressed by Dr Dampare’s expertise and boldness under immense pressure.
He stated, “To be frank, Ghanaians must stand up for Dampare. His security arrangement and strategic planning saved this country. But for him and his team, this country would have probably tipped over.”
“We saw how some recalcitrant soldiers behaved, but Dampare insisted that the only time the military would be officially deployed was under his instruction, and he stayed committed to his promise. God bless him for the work he did.”
Nana Ohene Ntow further urged Ghanaians to commend leaders who exceed expectations, just as they criticize those who under perform.
“It is important to recognize and appreciate the efforts of individuals like Dr Dampare, who have shown exemplary leadership in difficult times,” he added.
Meanwhile, Professor Ransford Gyampo, a political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, has defended Dr Dampare against recent criticisms by ACP Dr Benjamin Agordzo, describing the comments as unwarranted and unfair.
Speaking on Thursday, Professor Gyampo highlighted the transformative leadership of the IGP, which he believes has significantly elevated the reputation and effectiveness of the Ghana Police Service.
“Respectfully, even though there is freedom of speech, it doesn’t lie in the mouth of my respected retired police officer to make such remarks,” Professor Gyampo said.
He credited Dr Dampare with resilience in the face of challenges, fairness during the elections, and the courage to defy orders that conflicted with his principles as a law enforcement officer.
“This is the only IGP who has survived plots for his removal by his appointing authority for simply doing his job well. “
“He is also the only IGP who successfully stopped the planned massive deployment of soldiers to cause confusion at certain voting centres during the elections,” Professor Gyampo stated.”
“He added that Dr Dampare’s reforms have been widely felt across the country and have earned him praise from across the political divide for his professionalism and impartiality.
