The Executive Director of the Ark Foundation, Dr Angela Dwamena-Aboagye, is wondering why, in this era of digitalisation and technological advancement, the Electoral Commission (EC) has not digitised its processes.
According to her, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has made readily available technology to simplify complex tasks. She said that this would make the electoral process more transparent.
“In this period of AI, I think we are way, way, way behind, and it is not good that our two main political parties, which we call the duopoly, continue to argue about everything,” she said on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday.
Her comments come on the back of the controversies which arose during the balloting at the EC office on Friday afternoon.
While picking their slots, the Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Omane Boamah, raised concerns that one of the balls had a unique feature that could compromise the integrity of the process.
However, the NPP's National Director of Research and Elections, Evans Nimako, would have none of that.
After over 30 minutes of argument, the Commission agreed to replace the affected ball, and the process was set to be re-run from scratch.
Madam Dwamena-Aboagye mentioned that incorporating AI in processes like these would prevent such altercations.
“We are in the age of AI; we can’t be choosing balls in a black rubber bag. Ghana, 2024 – I think that needs to change,” she added.
Meanwhile, she called for a national dialogue to deliberate on the issue and discuss the way forward.
