The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has acknowledged the withdrawal of services by staff of the Volta River Authority (VRA) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) in Tamale and surrounding areas, reportedly due to security concerns.

A joint resolution signed by the Chairmen of the Senior Staff Association of NEDCo and the VRA Division Union at an emergency meeting cited persistent hostility and a lack of security protection as key reasons for the strike.

Responding to the development, Spokesperson and Head of Communication at the Ministry, Richmond Rockson, has called for calm among the public as the Ministry takes immediate steps to address the situation.

“The Ministry has taken notice of these reports. John Abdulai Jinapor, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, is currently on a short leave. In his absence, the Minister for Finance is overseeing the Ministry’s operations.”

“We will give a full briefing to the supervising Minister immediately. Mr Jinapor resumes work on Monday, 4 August. Upon his return, a full briefing will be provided, and all necessary measures will be taken to resolve the impasse swiftly,” Richmond Rockson stated.

“On behalf of my Minister, Mr Jinapor, I urge residents of Tamale and its environs to cooperate with VRA/NEDCo staff as they carry out their legitimate duties. It is important to note that the withdrawal of services could potentially lead to disruptions in power supply.”

The Ministry has reaffirmed its commitment to restoring services and ensuring the safety of all personnel.
