The Odumase Krobo Circuit Court, presided over by Mr Asmah Akwasi Asiedu, has jailed Emmanuel Kwasi Brown, a painter, who posed as a military man and stole items belonging to one Fianko Emmanuel Ansah valued at GH¢373 to 60 months imprisonment with hard labour on each count to run concurrently.
According to the judge, he punished Brown severely since his modus operandi should be abhorred by all civilised society, the punishment was to deter him and others who wanted to reap from where they had not sown by posing as security officers.
The presiding judge ordered the police to hand over the items to the owner.
It would be recalled that The Mirror in its Saturday, September 17, 2011 edition, published a story with the headline “Fake military man in trouble,” where the Odumase Krobo Circuit Court remanded Brown into prison custody for unlawful entry and attempted stealing.
Chief Inspector Emelia Ebeheakey, the prosecutor, told the court that Ansah is an accountant at the Akuse branch of the Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB) while Brown who claimed to be a painter and soldier, lives at Lashibi.
She said on July 9, 2011 at about 5:15.a.m. Ansah locked his room and left for Tema.
According to the prosecutor, about 10:00 a.m. on the same day, a witness who stays next to Ansah overheard the continuous barking of dogs in Ansah’s house and therefore, went to see what was happening.
According to Chief Inspector Ebeheakey, when the witness entered the house, she saw a bag at the entrance of the room. She also saw Brown in Ansah’s room dressed in military uniform. She, therefore, challenged Brown and asked him to come out and when he came out, the witness confronted him as to who gave him the key to open the door.
The prosecutor said Brown told her Ansah gave him the key but when she pressed further for Brown to describe Ansah, he could not.
The witness then called her husband to come to her aid to arrest Brown but before the husband could respond, Brown bolted through the back door of the building.
A report was made to the police at Akuse and Brown was later arrested by the Tema Police and handed over to their Akuse counterparts.
In his caution statement, Brown admitted the offence and stated further that he used a crowbar to break Ansah's door.
