A member of Ghanaians calling for the Akufo-Addo government to FixTheCountry says the group has no leaders pushing its agenda.
Oliver Barker-Vormawor said “For the avoidance of doubt, the call to Fix the Country, has no leaders. It has no followers. It is the bubbling up of spontaneity and citizen action at its finest. At no point, did anyone who sympathizes with the call have any conversation to elect Ms. Della as leader.”
According to him, the projection of Della Russel Ocloo, a journalist, as the leader of the movement was a mistake resulting from a leaked document.
He explained that her name had only been penciled down in an earlier version of a document as a resource person to advice on how the media could be used to spark a conversation on fixing Ghana.
“We wanted to speak to them to gain their insights and whether they have any advice to give persons who want to use media tools to spark a conversation.
“Ms. Della’s name came up in that context, and we had penciled her down as someone we could reach out to if she has any insights in her many years as a professional journalist.
“I did have a conversation with Della; and she noted that everybody has a right to voice their grievances as long as they do it in accordance with the law. At no point was there any discussion about her leading any movement nor speaking on our behalf as conveners/organizers.”
However, the document was leaked before it could be finalised and it was published by some media houses.
“Regrettably, Della came to be identified bizarrely among almost 20 names as a leader.”
Mr Barker-Vormawor says he takes full responsibility for the lapse and believes Ms Ocloo deserves an apology “for our lapse and for any distress the premature and erroneous news item may have caused her.”
He added that this is the latest tactic by those opposed to the movement to quell the call for accountability and social justice from the political class.
“I must say that the tragedy of politics in this country is that it has killed all that is good in us. It has nurtured our very worst; set us against each other. We have been convinced that we are either NDC or NPP and by that strange affiliation, we are enemies.
“Even in the face of a spontaneous movement that many people do not understand and are struggling to comprehend, the same discredited frameworks for dividing us are still being deployed to undermine us.
“We know the system will try to bury us. They have done that so many times. It’s the only rule in their playbook. What they do not know is that, even though ‘They Tried to Bury Us, They Didn’t Know We Were Seeds’”
He called on all Ghanaians to join the call to FixTheCountry.
“No matter where you are and what you are doing; do not wait on any leaders. Speak your own truth, demand better! Demand that they FixTheCountry!”
