The Ghana Armed Forces says it has instituted major reforms in military training to make soldiers more humane but strong.

The reforms come in the wake of several complaints about inhuman treatment meted out to military trainees and recruits.

A video of navy officers molesting their recruits has gone viral on many social media networks resuscitating the age-old controversy about the style of military training.

The navy officers turned the heads of recruits into drums and repeatedly beat their well-shaved heads with batons, while asking the recruits  if their heads were shining.

The video has received widespread condemnation.

A colonel with the Ghana Armed Forces, Festus Aboagye has described the video as unfortunate.

"I sympathize with the people involved and I sympathize with the military," he said, adding the military itself will not be proud of the video.

While admitting that such training regimes are not peculiar to Ghana, Col Festus Aboagye said reforms in military training may be long overdue.

Director of Public Affairs of the Ghana Armed Forces, Col Mbawine Atintande said the video has come to the notice of his administration and they are not proud about it.

He said his outfit has instituted an investigation into the matter and will bring the perpetrators to book.

More importantly, Col Atintande said the military has taken a number of steps, including major reforms in the training regimes for its recruits.

He said the new training regimes now focus more on courage and mental toughness
