The Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the Ghana 2008 Africa Cup of Nations has commended the efforts of the volunteers of the tournament for their support that ensured the successful organization of the event.
Magnus Rex Danquah, Chief Operating Officer who said this during a “Thank You” event for volunteers of the Accra-Venue on Saturday, said the LOC appreciates their contributions towards the success of the January 20 to February 10 championships.
“The LOC appreciates your immense contributions towards all activities relating to the tournament,” he said.
The volunteers assisted in areas such as Ticketing, Accommodation, Media, Accreditation, Transportation and Medicals among others.
Mr Rex Danquah urged the volunteers to use the knowledge acquired from their various fields at the tournament to assist towards the development of sports in the country.
The Operating Officer assured them that the database would form the core of the National Volunteer Programme, assuring them that they will be considered for future events.
“Don’t hesitate to answer such calls for future events,” he concluded.
Each of the over 850 volunteers was presented with a certificate of appreciation and a cash of 200 Ghana cedis.
George Sarfo, one of the volunteers in recounting his services, said it was a great experience and relished another opportunity in the not too distant future to be of service to the national goal.
“I have really learnt a lot and had the opportunity of working with some great people. I feel proud that my effort was influential in the successful organization of the Ghana 2008 Africa Cup of Nations.”
A similar event will be organised on Tuesday, March 18 in Kumasi for volunteers of the Kumasi venue.
The Essipon and Tamale stadium venues had their share last Tuesday, March 11 and Thursday, March 13 respectively.
About 2000 volunteers assisted in the organization of the 26th MTN Africa Cup of Nations, which saw Egypt winning the ultimate for an unprecedented sixth time.
