The Ghana Institution of Engineers (GhIE) on Thursday September 25 held its 45th Presidential Address at the Engineers Centre, Roman Ridge in Accra.
Every President of Ghana Institution of Engineers is mandated to address Engineers during their tenure in office.
Speaking on the topic: “Quality of Life and Transportation”, the Institution’s president, Ing. Magnus Lincoln said the quality of life in relation to transportation have a profound telling on economies thus the need to sufficiently fund the sector.
"The management and operation of transport system have an important influence on the economy. Well-managed, easily accessible public transportation attracts workers into cities, brings commuters to and from work, and moves goods from where they are produced to where they are consumed.
"Congestion negatively impacts the quality of life in a city by decreasing personal and business productivity, lowering air quality and creating noise pollution. The financial impact of inefficient transport systems is considerable and will increase if not addressed by cities," he said.
Under the chairmanship of Ing. Togbi Kporku III, Chief Executive Officer of Conterra Ltd, the event attracted high-profile personalities from the engineering sector, including past presidents of the institute, council members, and representatives of sister professional bodies in the country.
Ing. Magnus said modern cities must incorporate three pillars.
"Modern cities must be sustainable, green and livable for their citizenry in the 21st century and beyond. These three facets of a modern city are fundamental principles that must be executed in terms of engineering principles."
