A Senior Research Fellow at the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research (KCCR) says Ghana has performed better than other countries in managing its Covid-19 situation.
However, Dr John Amuasi says there's still more room for improvement.
"Ghana is doing much much better than many other countries but it's still not good enough. The data is so lacking that its very hard to make useful projections regarding the needs for vaccines," he said.
The comment comes as part of discussions on Covid-19 and how to manage Ghana's current situation.
Speaking on JoyFM's Super Morning Show Tuesday, Dr Amuasi bemoaned the new spike in active cases and reiterated the need for the country to improve its testing, enhance data collection and also beef up efforts in contact tracing.
"What's striking about the disease today is how we see this astronomical increase in the numbers of deaths. It's less of the number of people who are getting infected and more about the number of people who are dying and this for me is the most disturbing phenomenon that we are witnessing," he said.
He added that data collection in the country has been underpowered such that, not enough data has been collected.
"In a pandemic like this, what you want to do is to measure a couple of things: your risk of infection, your rate of spread of infection, your rate of hospitalisation, must be as accurately as possible.
"You can go beyond that and measure the levels to which people have been exposed because that has implications on how you're going to roll out your vaccination program.
He also stated that particular attention must be placed on the rate of infection as "it informs every decision that its taken around what one is doing to prevent the spread of the disease."
"It's not just something that is put out there as something that is too technical," he said.
