Ghana is set to expand access to education through Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools developed in local languages, the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced.
The Minister shared the update on Facebook on Friday, January 23, 2026, revealing that he recently held discussions with the Vice President of Google at the ongoing Generative AI Summit in the United Kingdom.
The talks focused on strategies to enhance learning outcomes across Ghana and the wider African continent.

“Yesterday, I had a fruitful engagement with the Vice President of Google, where ideas were shared to improve quality education in Ghana and Africa as a whole,” Iddrisu said.
The initiative, part of Google’s $37 million investment in Africa, will include speech recognition and AI tools for Ghanaian languages such as Twi, Ewe, and Dagbani, targeting non-standard speech to make digital learning more accessible.

Iddrisu also emphasised the importance of including Hausa, widely spoken across Ghana and West Africa, to promote regional inclusion.
“The deployment of AI in local languages will help ensure that all learners, including those in rural communities or with disabilities, can access educational resources effectively,” he noted.

Google has assured the Ministry that the tools will be provided on a zero-rated basis, offering curriculum-aligned content and guidance on the responsible use of AI in teaching and learning.

The partnership also involves collaboration with the University of Ghana and GDI Hub to advance AI research in local languages, positioning Ghana as a leader in inclusive digital education in Africa. “Ghana is not just participating in the AI revolution, we are helping to shape it for Africa,” Iddrisu added.
