Ghana is calling on Colombia to strengthen cooperation beyond the bilateral level and work together to promote a more inclusive and equitable international system that better represents developing nations.
The call was made by Ghana’s Vice-President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, during bilateral discussions with Colombia’s Vice-President, Francia Elena Márquez Mina, who is on an official visit to Accra.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang said the importance of stronger South-South collaboration and said both countries had much to gain from a deepened partnership.
“I wish to highlight the profound significance of our shared Afro-descendant heritage. This enduring connection provides a strong foundation for joint initiatives in heritage tourism, cultural preservation, and diaspora engagement.
"These are initiatives that celebrate our shared past while creating meaningful opportunities for social inclusion and economic advancement,” she added.
The Vice-President explained that Ghana was looking beyond traditional bilateral arrangements and wanted joint action on the global stage. She highlighted the shared values that guide both countries.
“Looking ahead, it is equally important that our cooperation extends beyond the bilateral arena. This is very, very important for us. Our two nations share principled commitments to foster a more inclusive and equitable international system, one that amplifies the voices of developing countries, strengthens South-South collaboration, and ensures global governance structures that reflect the priorities and aspirations of all of us, regardless of where we are, regardless of the state of our economies.”
She added that Ghana and Colombia could contribute meaningfully to global reform efforts through joint engagement at the multilateral level.
“Through closer collaboration in multilateral platforms, we can advance our shared goals and support the evolution of a more just and representative international system.”
