A significant power outage that affected several parts of the country on Thursday has been attributed to an accident involving a tipper truck, as per a joint statement from the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
The disruption occurred at around 1:42 p.m. on May 1, 2025, when the truck, unloading stones at a private construction site, struck the Nkawkaw–Konongo transmission line with its raised bucket.
This caused severe damage to the line and triggered a widespread system failure.
According to GRIDCo and ECG, the impact led to the tripping of power plants at Aboadze and Anwomaso, cutting off power to the Western, Central, and Northern regions, as well as some areas in Accra.
The companies confirmed that engineers were promptly dispatched to the site to assess the damage and begin repair work.
“Our engineers have mobilised to the location to repair the damaged transmission line, and work is ongoing to restore all affected areas by 6 p.m. today,” the statement said.
“We apologise for the inconvenience this incident has caused,” the companies added, urging the public to remain patient while efforts to stabilise the grid continue.
