President John Mahama has cautioned that without stronger regional solidarity and continuous dialogue with Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, the threat of terrorism and violent extremism could spread further across West Africa, undermining peace and stability in the sub-region.

He noted that Ghana’s engagement with the three Sahelian countries must include wider stakeholder involvement to strengthen cooperation and prevent insecurity from destabilising the entire bloc.

President Mahama highlighted that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is currently in dialogue with Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, which have withdrawn from the regional body to form the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).

He stressed the importance of coordinated efforts to address the security concerns raised by these countries, particularly the growing threat of terrorism.

The President made these remarks at the Jubilee House in Accra after receiving the new German Ambassador to Ghana, Frederick Landshoft.

He called for international solidarity to support strategies aimed at tackling insecurity and fostering stability in the region.

Ambassador Landshoft, for his part, expressed appreciation for the warm reception and assured that Germany would work closely with Ghana to support initiatives geared towards addressing the challenges raised by President Mahama.
