The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has warned that it will resort to legal action against defaulting water consumers after failing to settle their debts within stipulation.
The company has noted that it will ensure all outstanding debts are collected.
The water supplying company has since last week employed robust mechanisms in collecting what it says is over GH₵800 million of debt owed by individuals and institutions.
According to the company, some high-consuming entities who had entered into an agreement to settle their debts have failed to do so, thereby forcing the company to use legal action.
The Public Relations Officer, Stanley Martey has however, emphasised that the company will not relent in pursuing its debtors.
“Things are going very well. Anywhere we visited people have made payments and so we expect that it’s going to continue as we move on.
"And like I said when we were moving on our rounds, we are not going to stop with this exercise until we collect all GH₵800 million owed the Ghana Water Company Limited. So it may not end next week, it may not end the week after, but until the GH₵800 million is paid,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mr. Martey has indicated that the company plans to reintroduce the prepaid metering system after earlier attempts failed.
He says people have tried to tamper with the meters in the earlier attempts by the company to roll out the prepaid services.
The company is in talks with institutions that are into metering systems and hopes to get a better system, according to Mr. Martey.
