Head-to-head record will be used to determine the winner of the 2009 Glo Premier League if any two sides finish level on points.
Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko are locked on 48 points apiece with two games remaining and even though Kotoko have the superior goal difference, Hearts will dethrone them as champions on account of their better performance in meetings between the two.
Hearts won the meeting in Kumasi 2-1 but lost the return encounter 0-1. They however scored two away goals which will give them the title.
GFA president Kwasi Nyantekyie says the clubs had agreed on the use of the head-to-head rule in October 2008 in order to avoid a repeats of high scoring games that have marred Leagues in the past.
Nyantekyie said: “We all agreed that when two sides finish level on points, we will look at wins in the two games between the teams, the goal difference in those two games, goals for in the two games and away goals in those games. If they are are level in all those areas, we will play a one off game at a neutral venue.”
“We put in place the rule in order not to have a repeat of the 30-0 game we did in the middle League when clubs needed goal difference to qualify.”
The head-to-head rule will however not be used to determine which clubs will be relegated if they finish level on points. That will be determined by the goals difference system.
Nyantekyie says he does not envisage any legal tussles out of the system.
“No club can go to court because all the clubs agreed to the rules before the League started. They have been aware from day one.”
