Hundreds of Electricity Company of Ghana customers are rushing to the offices of the power distribution company to get their metering challenges rectified in order to avoid being prosecuted.
The ECG gave a one-month moratorium to its customers, which expires on Wednesday.
The utility company explained that customers with uncaptured meters, billing anomalies, faulty meters, meter bypassing, and meter tampering who do not visit their offices to get the issues rectified will face prosecution.
The exercise forms part of efforts to rid the system of any electrical illegalities and also reduce the utility company’s commercial losses.
JoyNews has been interacting with some of the customers at the Kasoa North ECG office.
“I have not received any bills for the past year and that’s why I am here." I want them to regularize the anomaly so I can pay," one customer said.
Another customer indicated: “I have been willing to get the challenge of not receiving bills fixed, but I don’t get time, so I decided to use today to get it fixed."
The ECG said they are excited at the responses they are getting from their customers and they will press to reduce the company's commercial losses, which is nearly 30%.
The ECG Kasoa North District Manager, Ing. Franklin Amegashitsi, said the number of people that rushed to their offices overwhelmed them. He indicated they had to call for support from the nearby district to enable them to attend to the customers.
“I am happy that the people, since the announcement of our moratorium, have responded very well. We hope with everybody’s support, to reduce our commercial losses, "he stated.
