Residents of Teshie Aboma, a suburb of Accra are yet to come to terms with the gory spectacle of a 45-year-old woman, Victoria Bortey, murdered in cold blood in her bedroom on Tuesday. Her husband, Armah Akrong, on interrogation by the Teshie police, claimed that he returned from work at about 9.30 p.m. on the said day to find his wife dead in their bedroom. He is, in the interim, being held as a suspect in the murder. The police said they are investigating why Akrong, 45, an electrician working at the Tema Municipal Assembly, failed to immediately report the death of his wife to the police until 2.15 a.m. yesterday. Teshie District Police Commander, Samuel Tibil Punobyin, told the Times yesterday that the suspect was subsequently arrested and escorted to the crime scene at a compound house at Teshie Aboma. "When the body of the deceased was examined by the police, there were multiple injuries on her face, neck and shoulders, while blood oozed from her nostrils," DSP Punobyin said, adding, "we believe there might have been strangulation after a struggle leading to her death. "The police suspect that Akrong killed his wife because of the time that lapsed before he reported the incident and, because of that, he is in police custody on suspicion of having committed the murder. DSP Punobyin told the Times that during preliminary investigations at the compound house where the killing occurred, the people were not forth-coming with information, making the work of the police difficult. All the information gathered, he said, was based on intelligence. DSP Punobyin said "when it becomes necessary, the police will not hesitate to round up inhabitants of the house to assist in the investigations since all of them could not deny having any knowledge of the incident in the couple’s bedroom." The body of the deceased has since been conveyed to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital mortuary for autopsy, after which the police "will know the next line of action to take." At 11 a.m., yesterday, when the Times got to the house, family members of the couple were seated discussing the tragedy. They were tight-lipped on the issue when the Times reporter sought a briefing from them and instead, referred him to the Teshie Police Station. However, the Times gathered that there had been no quarrel between the couple who have been married for 10 years.
