The General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) says he will be happy to partner the party’s flagbearer, John Mahama if he is chosen as running mate for the 2020 presidential elections.
Johnson Asiedu Nketia who is affectionately called General Mosquito said he will not put himself forward but is prepared to take up the challenge if selected.
Although the NDC hasn’t given any indications of making an announcement to the effect soon, media reports of considered candidates have been rife.
One of the names that have come up lately is the party’s Asiedu Nketia.
Speaking to Gifty Andoh on The Pulse on Wednesday, Mr. Nketiah said: “I would gladly accept the offer if it comes.”
He, however, stated that quality leadership skills, rather than knowledge in a specific field, is required to serve in appointed or elected offices.
Liking his example to the Finance Ministry, the NDC scribe said persons from other fields have manned affairs better than appointees with Accounting or Finance backgrounds.
“…[Yaw] Osafo-Marfo who also comes across as one of our best Finance Ministers is an engineer; so for people to narrowly think you have to be an expert in a particular field before you can perform…is wrong,” he said.
The NDC has, meanwhile, dismissed reports that former Finance Minister, Kwesi Botchwey has been selected as running mate.
In a swift response to a media report, John Mahama posted: “The Daily Graphic report of the selection of a running mate is false.”
Investigations into the report
Mr. Nketiah has said the party is investigating the report of the selection of a running mate
According to him, Prof. Botchwey petitioned the party to investigate the issue.
The party, he said, is therefore investigating how the report came about.
