A resident scholar at the Institute of Democratic Governance is pushing for major reforms in Ghana’s electoral system.
Professor Kwame Ninsin says in addition to attaining 50 percent plus one of the popular votes, the winner of presidential elections should be made to secure 50 percent plus one votes in at least six regions.
He also wants the country to move from what he describes as the winner-takes all system.
Professor Ninsin tells Joy News a proportional representation system would help smaller political parties when it comes to decision making.
“A party can just capitalize on the heavy concentration of voters in minority regions to win the election 50 per cent plus.
“2008 exposed that possibility, that danger by which we could have had president representing a minority of voters in the country.
