MP for Abuakwa South Atta Akyea has proposed that parliament should amend the constitutional clause that allows the judiciary to retain only 15% of the revenue it generates internally.
Lawyer Atta Achia believes the law as it stands now is inimical to the finances of the Judiciary in the face of the institution's budgetary cuts for 2011.
Atta Akyea explained that increasing the threshold of the 15% to about 45% percent will ease the burden on government in the disbursement of funds to the Judiciary.
“All these monies generated internally; the court fines and all the other revenues, the judiciary is just permitted to retain 15% leaving all the cash constraints,” he lamented.
He said if the threshold goes up, the judiciary can have enough money to run its internal programmes without looking up to the government for financial support.
