Youth of the ruling National Democratic congress in Karaga, Northern Region, Sunday resisted attempts by the police to arrest some of their members suspected to have vandalized party property in the wake of a protest.
According to Joy News’ Mahama Shaibu, the police had to retreat from the assignment, while Regional Minister Moses Bukari Magbenba promised he would seek a reinforced security team to effect the arrest of the suspects.
The party youth were Friday protesting the nomination of one Sulemana Iddi by President J.E.A. Mills for the post of District Chief Executive when it turned rowdy.
They prefer the recall of Alhaji Haruna Sandow who was relieved of the post in April.
The NDC Northern regional executives have condemned the vandalism that attended the protest, expressing doubt if those involved were true party members.
A statement signed by deputy regional chairman, Sofo Azorka, noted that it is the prerogative of the president to nominate whoever he deemed fit for the position and such a nomination should be respected. While expressing the confidence of the executives in the ability of the president and his appointees to deliver on the Better Ghana Agenda promise of the ruling party, the statement cautioned the wayward party youth would be sanctioned.
