A special security task force of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has arrested 30 commercial drivers for allegedly charging passengers unapproved transport fares at night.
The operation, conducted at Santasi, targeted drivers who reportedly demanded as much as GH¢10 for short trips that officially cost GH¢3, particularly from Santasi to Ahenema Kokobeng.
Leader of the taskforce, Sergeant Sampson Dadzie, said the arrests form part of efforts to clamp down on the growing practice of fare overcharging, which he described as unfair and illegal.
“We are doing this to help clean the system. There hasn’t been any increment in transportation fares, so why should you charge overboard? With this kind of attitude, how will the nation develop?” he quizzed.
Sergeant Dadzie confirmed that all the arrested drivers would be processed for court to face prosecution. He also cautioned other commercial drivers against exploiting passengers during the evening rush hour or at isolated stations.
Some passengers who spoke to Adom News commended the taskforce for the intervention, noting that drivers often take advantage of limited transportation options at night to inflate fares.
“You are charging us GH¢10 to Ahenema Kokobeng; why — are we going to Manso? It’s too bad,” a frustrated commuter lamented.
The KMA taskforce, which includes officers from the police, military, and the Assembly, has vowed to sustain the operation to ensure compliance with approved fares and protect passengers from exploitation.
