A Culinary Arts student of the Koforidua Technical University in the Eastern Region has won this year’s National cooking competition held at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra.
Victoria Armah, a Level 200 student beat eight other contestants, also Technical University students, to win the ultimate prize.
She will benefit from a four-month internship package at the Labadi Beach Hotel, as part of her prize. She also received a hamper and culinary training kits.
The biannual National Cooking Competition which was Organised by the USA Poultry & Egg Export Council for Technical Universities across the country, seeks to build an exquisite human capital to man the country’s fast growing hospitality industry.
It also aims at equipping culinary students with knowledge on poultry and various aspects of culinary arts.
The eight other contestants were presented with consolation prizes and certificate of participation.
A visibly elated Victoria Armah slumped onto the floor when her name was mentioned as the ultimate winner, and started rolling to celebrate her victory while her jumped about in jubilation.
Speaking after the programme, Victoria Armah thanked the USA Poultry & Egg Export Council for their effort to train them with modern culinary skills, which she said will help shape their dreams of becoming chefs in the future.
She also thanked her lecturers for their selfless contribution during the training.
Victoria Armah paid glowing tribute to her late grandmother who according to her, took her through basic cooking skills which motivated her to pursue Home Economics at the Senior High School.
Victoria announced that she wants to become a chef ambassador to train young people with the skills she acquired from the programme.
She therefore promised to start it from her previous school, Presbyterian Senior High School located at Larteh Akuapem also in the Eastern Region, and later extend it to her community as her contribution to fight against poverty in Ghana.
In his remarks, the American renowned chef, David Bonom who was the lead instructor for the programme said he was overwhelmed by the performance of the participants, adding that they hold a great promise as he sees great future chefs among them.
According to him the excellent works they put up made the judging session very tough to select the winners.
