Kumasi Asante Kotoko on Sunday kicked off their 2007 CAF/MTN Champions League campaign with a narrow one-nil win over visiting Port Authority of The Gambia at the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium.
Defender Dan Acquah broke the deadlock in the 67th minute from the spot to give Asante Kotoko the breather after new signing Nii Adjei was whacked in the box as a Port Authority defender made a belated challenge.
In spite of the win, Kotoko have set themselves a difficult task in the return encounter as the visitors, fielding as many as five players from their national youth team, matched them boot for boot.
Kotoko could have doubled or even tripled the score as they created several goal opportunities; however wayward shooting and a brilliant display of goalkeeping saw their efforts paying off with the not too pleasant win.
The return encounter is in two weeks.
Ghana's other representatives in the competition, AshantiGold won their first leg tie away to Renacimiento Club of Equatorial Guinea by a lone goal and the return encounter, fixed for the Len Clay Stadium, comes off next weekend.
