The crave for continental success begins proper for Kumasi Asante Kotoko tomorrow when the• Porcupine Warriors host Wikki Tourists of Nigeria in the second leg of their CAF Confederation Cup preliminary tie. After a 2-2 draw in Bauchi, Nigeria, Kotoko appear assured of qualification, but the two-time continental lords have assumed a rather uncompromising mood that has raised the stakes ahead of the clash.
With strict measures adopted by management and the technical bench to maintain discipline, the ambience within camp is reminiscent of events leading to any of their giant feats, whether in domestic competition or continental action. And from skipper Emmanuel Osei Kuffour to the club's leading scorer, Eric Bekoe, and the other members of the younger generation seeking international success, it is a question of focus that has gripped their attention over the past two weeks.Such is the new attitude since returning from their reclusive training tour of Bechem in the Brong Ahafo Region that very little is shared in the open with the public.Kuffour's inspiring game and firm leadership, Bekoe's focus and adaptability to team play, Nii Adjei's midfield distribution and Richard Manu's organisation of the back from central defence have held their faithful supporters spellbound at training.Wikki, very much unknown on the continental terrain, are still hopeful of staging one of the biggest upsets in African football. At the plush Baba Yara Stadium where a mammoth attendance is expected, the Nigerian outfit may realize belatedly that the job on hand involves more than the main characters on the field.
Wikki were expected in town early in the week but news of a monitoring team dispatched ahead of the main team's arrival suggests the conviction with which they will tackle Kotoko tomorrow, though they may not play more than ordinary tourists.Source: The Mirror
