The Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, Mr Samuel Sarpong, has urged the youth of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to stay away from violent acts.
He said such acts tended to paint bad picture of the party and undermine the goodwill of the people. He therefore, implored them to be disciplined and rally behind government to implement its development agenda.
Mr Sarpong again told the youth that violent street protests and forcing people out of their offices were simply unproductive and must be avoided.
He said this at a meeting of youth organizers of the party in the Ashanti Region on Friday.
Drawn from all the 39 constituencies, the youth discussed ways of helping President Evans Atta Mills' administration to deliver on its election pledges.
Other government officials that addressed the youth were the Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, and the Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, who were in the region for a conference.
The KMA Chief Executive said government had put in place interventions to address the growing youth unemployment citing the National Plantation Development Programme, the Youth in Agriculture Project and the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP) as some of the examples.
Mr Sarpong, therefore, called on the youth to be patient and to allow the government some space to roll out its well thought out policies and programmes to make live better for all.
Mr Ofosu Ampofo spoke against internal wrangling and said they should ensure unity of purpose.
He said government was responding to the social needs of the poor and vulnerable, providing teaching and learning aids as well as uniforms to some school children.
The Eastern Regional Minister said the future of the party lay with the youth and called on them (youth) to work hard to retain the NDC in power in the next election.
Mr Ankrah said current macroeconomic indicators showed a recovering economy which should give people hope.
The cedi has stabilized and inflation was on a downward trend, he said.
The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NDC, Mr Yaw Obimpeh, praised the youth for their hard work and dedication that helped to bring the party back to power.
He asked them to continue to remain loyal to the party.
