Seven persons have been arrested in connection with the shooting of a police constable in Kumasi on Sunday. Constable Frank William Blankson was shot dead by suspected armed robbers. The incident occurred during an exchange of fire between the deceased and a gang of unregistered motorbike riders. Deputy Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Corporal Godwin Ahianyo told Joy FM the deceased was part of a patrol team that bumped into a group of about 15 unregistered motorbike riders. According to Corporal Ahianyo, the deceased, sensing danger, shot one of the suspects but they responded in equal measure leading to his death. Luv Fm’s Elton John Brobbey visited the crime scene and the morgue with the regional police command in Kumasi and told Joy News a committee has been setup to look into the incident. He said information gathered from some residents about the background of the suspected armed robbers is quite murky. Whilst some believe they were armed robbers, he said, others told him the people were just having fun when the police shot and killed one without any serious provocation. The regional command is expected to issue a formal statement on the incident. An eyewitness also told Luv FM’s Kofi Asante that the riders, angered by the action of Constable Blankson, returned to the scene in about 20 minutes later to attack the policeman who was then alone. They pulled him down and shot him with his (policeman’s) own riffle. Story by Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
