The Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited (GWL), Adam Mutawakilu, has announced that the Kwanyako Water Treatment Plant is now producing at full capacity after months of operational challenges caused by high turbidity levels.
The plant, which supplies water to several communities, had been struggling with extreme cloudiness levels in the water reaching over 11,000 NTU, far above its treatment limit of 2,500 NTU.
The situation had severely affected production and disrupted supply.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Monday, October 20, Mr Mutawakilu said the plant’s return to full operation followed significant engineering adjustments, including moving the pumps from the ground to the surface treatment area.
“We had to do re-engineering by bringing the pumps up. That is why we are now able to produce 100% water,” he explained.
“The Kwanyako Treatment Plant is now working, with no high turbidity beyond the capacity of the plant. As we speak, the Kwanyako Treatment Plant is producing 100% water. But that will not last long because the water level will drop as the dry season comes in.”
He cautioned that the current level of production may not be sustained as the country approaches the dry season, which could lower water levels and affect operations again.
The GWL boss also called on corporate bodies to support efforts to desilt the plant’s pump intakes, citing financial constraints as a key challenge for the company.
Mr Mutawakilu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to tackling illegal water connections and safeguarding the country’s water resources, adding that efficiency and sustainability remain central to the company’s operations.
