Private legal practitioner, Dennis Adjei Dwomoh, has decried Ghana's lack of commitment to protecting the vulnerable and victims of abuse.
Speaking on Prime Morning last Friday, he indicated that funds committed to caring for the marginalised in society are depleted and nonexistent in some cases.
“In this country, there are not more than 20 lawyers, for Ghana Legal Aid. Legal aid is suppose to be the lawyer for the poor and the aid is underfunded in this country.”
“Last year we passed a Witness Protection Act, which was to establish a Fund to support the victim and witnesses. That Fund as we speak does not have any money in it,” he stated.
The need for state support of the less privileged has recently been highlighted as Ghanaians express shock over the plight of 43-year-old woman suffering from breast cancer.
The single mother of two has her breast decaying and is facing eviction from her apartment as she’s behind in the payment of her rent. Also, her landlord can’t stand the stench from her rotting breast.
Mr Adjei Dwomoh stressed the State’s commitment is needed to protect people like her.
