The Department of Social Welfare is to support the vulnerable in communities most affected by recent floods under the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme. Under the Programme, 30.00 Ghana cedis would be paid to care givers in each household where there are orphans, people of 65 years and above, those with disabilities without any livelihood and skills for two months. Madam Victoria Natsu, the Assistant Director of the Department of Social Welfare, Headquarters, said this at the briefing of District Welfare Officers in the Volta Region in Ho on how to collect data on those affected. She urged the District Welfare Officers to work closely with officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and ensure that the data would be authentic, reliable and verifiable. Madam Natsu asked the Social Welfare Officers to impress on the identified Care-givers to be present to collect the amounts to be paid to them. "The amount would not be paid to any proxies", she emphasised, explaining that the monies would go directly to the Care-givers who might not necessarily be heads of the households. She called for the involvement of women in the collection of the data. "It is a big boost to our work and brings us much closer to the communities," she said. Source: GNA
