Voting is progressing steadily on the ongoing national delegates’ congress of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP)in all but two of the 230 constituencies across the country. About 1130,000 delegates are expected to vote. The election started at 8:00am in all the voting centres except in a few where it started at 9am. Five aspirants contesting for the presidential slot are: Prof. Frimpong-Boateng, MP Isaac Osei, Apsotle Kwame Koduah, Mr. Alan Kyerematen and Nana Akufo-Addo. Early reports say there was some confusion with regards to proxy list but that has been rectified. Reports across the country say turnout has been very impressive in almost all the centres with a pocket of skirmishes in some constituencies - Obuasi and Ayawaso Central - where some members belonging to one of the the presidential candidates are allegedly distributing money. Former President John Agyekum Kufuor and former Vice-President Aliu Mahama cast their votes around midday. Nana Akufo-Addo one of the contenders in the primary election was not able to vote when he went to the party’s headquarters in Accra to do so because his name was not in the voter’s register. Reports say the anomaly has been cleared but it is not clear if Nana Addo would vote before close of voting at 3:00pm. Mr Isaac Osei voted early in the morning in his capacity as the Member of Parliament for Subin constituency. Meanwhile Messrs Alan Kyerematen, Prof. Frimpong Boateng and Apostle Kwame Koduah are not delegates. The Member of Parliament of Ablekuma North Justice Appiah, whose constituency is not voting in this particular election, was also prevented from voting when attempted to do so at the party’s headquarters creating some confusion. Some constituencies have already finished voting but counting has not begun yet. At Weija constituency in Accra names of two polling stations were not found in the Electoral Commission's register. The party's register say 168 polling stations but the EC has 166. As it stands now 10 people are likely to be disenfranchised. At 1:00pm Joseph Osei reports from the Upper East Region that voting at Bongo constituency has ended. He said everything is calm in the region. Richard Kojo Nyarko reports from the Central Region that the process is generally peaceful there. He said a former Member of Parliament for Mfantsiman West Mr Stephen Asamoah Boateng was alleged distributing GH¢20 and food to delegates who are made to swear to vote for Mr Alan Kyerematen. At the Ayawaso East in Accra voting is almost done at the St Kizito Catholic Church. Delegates who finished casting their votes have refused to go home but gathered near the centre singing song in praise of Nana Akufo-Addo. NPP delegates in accident, 33 rushed to hospital says Jake Obetsebi Lamptey Thirty-three delegates of the New Patriotic Party who were being bussed to cast their vote at Chiana-Paga in the Kassena Nankana District of the Upper East Region have been involved in an accident. NPP national chairman Jake Obetsebi Lamptey told Joy News the victims have been rushed to the hospital and he prays they are saved from the unfortunate incident. Many constituencies are reporting early completion of voting. Offinso North completes voting by 12:30pm, await 3pm for vote-counting. Tescon president says refused voting The president of the University of Ghana arm of the Tertiary Education Students Confederacy Network (TESCON) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) says he has been disenfranchised because his name could not be traced in the register. Kumi told Asempa FM that he was to vote as a member of Tescon’s executives in the Greater Accra region, however he, another delegate, were turned away because their names were not captured. He suspects it is a plot by known persons in the party to ‘pay him back’ for his alleged role in elections on campus. The development, he suggests, is largely indicative of a number of people who hypocritically profess love for the party but are hate mongers and anti-unity. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo finally votes Flag-bearer candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo has returned to cast his vote finally at the NPP headquarters at about 2:30pm after challenges with his status as a designated voted initially prevented him. Arrest A research officer of the New Patriotic Party has been arrested at the Wa East constituency for removing the pictures of some delegates and replacing them with four other persons who are not even members of the NPP. He is currently being held in police custody. Brawl At the Adenta constituency there was a brawl between Benard Owusu constituency organizer and Emmanuel Atakora a campaign coordinator of Mr Alan Kyerematen over an amount of GH¢2,700. The money believed to be in possession of Mr Atakora was to be distributed to delegates, and an attempt to force him to release the money for distribution resulted in a confrontation between the two. The police had to intervene to restore peace and order to the centre. Delegates threaten mayhem at Juaboso Voting has long concluded at Juaboso in the Western Region but delegates are threatening to prevent election officers from counting the ballots over what they say is the refusal of party officials in the constituency to hand them some 50 Ghana cedis each. One Bawumia, a delegate, told Asempa FM that the money is supposed to be a contribution of all the five contestants for the party’s flagbearer post towards their feeding and transport but constituency executives are sitting on the money. He said the delegates are threatening to pass a vote of no confidence in the executives and will not allow the counting of ballots to take place. Bawumia said ‘even koko has not been served the delegates since morning.
