Government Communications Minister, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has dismissed suggestions that President John Dramani Mahama is deliberately tolerating illegal mining, or galamsey, to boost foreign exchange earnings from gold exports.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Monday, September 15, Mr Kwakye Ofosu insisted that such claims were unfounded and misrepresent the government’s position.
“The President is by no means encouraging illegal mining in favour of increased gold exports for foreign exchange receipts,” he stated.
He emphasised that the government recognises the destructive impact of galamsey on lives, livelihoods, and the environment, and is committed to addressing it decisively.
Mr Kwakye Ofosu reaffirmed that President Mahama’s approach is to combine regulation, law enforcement, and sustainable alternatives to protect communities and natural resources, while also safeguarding the economy.
