Mavis Araba Ampaa has assumed office as the first female Chairperson of the new Governing Board of the National Communications Authority (NCA).

The newly constituted board has been tasked to accelerate Ghana’s digital transformation and restore the nation’s leadership in Africa’s telecommunications space.

Administering the oath of office and secrecy, the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, congratulated the board members and urged them to "hit the ground running," noting that the NCA board was the last to be formed under the new administration, nine months into government.

“We are finalising a new Electronic Communications Act that will redefine Ghana’s digital landscape. You are coming in at a crucial moment to help us complete that transition and position Ghana for 5G deployment and readiness for 5G adoption,” he said.

He expressed concern over the delayed rollout of 5G technology, reminding the board that Ghana, once a leader in 3G and 4G deployment, risked falling behind its peers. He therefore charged them to focus on spectrum efficiency, service quality, and user experience.

“We’ve tackled data pricing and affordability; the next challenge is quality of experience. Citizens must feel the impact of our policies through faster, more reliable internet. That’s the legacy I want us to deliver,” he emphasised.

Mr George further reminded the board to maintain a clear distinction between policy direction and administrative management, stressing that day-to-day operations rest with the Director-General and his deputies.

He noted that the inauguration of the new board aligns with the Ministry’s broader strategy to consolidate Ghana’s digital economy and innovation agenda, enhance connectivity, promote digital literacy, and expand broadband access nationwide.

The Minister also revealed that 2026 will mark the NCA’s 30th anniversary, to be celebrated with major international events such as the African Telecommunications Union (ATU) and International Telecommunication Union (ITU) conferences, positioning Ghana as a hub for digital policy dialogue and regulatory innovation in Africa.

Hon. George described the new board as diverse, competent, and forward-looking, assuring them of the Ministry’s continuous support.

“Our work directly impacts the lives of Ghanaians, from the data they use to the calls they make. Let’s make this sector one of the shining examples of the Mahama administration,” he added.

In her acceptance remarks, Mrs Ampaa expressed gratitude to the President and the Minister for their confidence, pledging to lead with integrity, innovation, and collaboration.

“This board represents a blend of experience, technical expertise, and public service commitment. We will work closely with the Ministry and management to strengthen regulatory oversight, enhance service delivery, and ensure that Ghana’s communications infrastructure meets global standards,” she said.

Mrs Ampaa added that the board would focus on spectrum management, consumer protection, and supporting the industry’s transition toward 5G and emerging technologies.
