Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accused the Minority of putting the reputation of the Supreme Court into disrepute over their comments on the Supreme Court’s ruling.
The apex court on Wednesday ruled that a Deputy Speaker of Parliament can be counted during the formation of a quorum for parliamentary decision-making and participate in voting while presiding.
The Minority in Parliament has since criticised the ruling by the Supreme Court describing it as a travesty of justice and judicial support for the e-levy.
Ningo-Prampram MP, Sam George argued that the Minority in Parliament will employ any legal means within parliamentary procedure to stop the Deputy Speaker from voting when presiding over proceedings.
“I deem it an illegality that the person presiding in the House will take part in the vote he is superintending over,” he said.
But the Deputy Majority Leader believes the members of the Minority are scandalizing the Supreme Court in stead of critiquing in good faith.
“He [Haruna Iddrisu] knows that political statement he made was incorrect, unacceptable, was scandalous and I beg to submit that if we don’t support the institutions of state as politicians, we will end up compromising our journey towards good governance and we would give room for some adventurous person to think that we are not serious in our politics,” he said on Top Story on Thursday.
Also speaking on Top Story, the Minority leader, Haruna Iddrisu contended that the Majority is creating an erroneous impression of Minority dictatorship.
He said, “what we need to do is to work together but this threat of we will do this, we will do that will not help anybody… The people of Ghana rightly voted for deeper consultation in order for us to build consensus for us to be guided by the collective good of the Ghanaian people. Their quality of life and not the pettiness of NDC, NPP partisanship.”
