The Metro Mass Transit has warned it would be compelled to withdraw services to some routes in three regions due to alleged acts of sabotage by some private transport operators.
Officials say some private transport operators tamper with the buses by deliberately puncturing the tyres in order to ground them.
Workshop Manager of MMT in the Ashanti Region, Peter Afful, told Luv News the alleged criminal act is rife in the Ashanti, Western and Central Regions.
According to the MMT, the alleged saboteurs place sharp metal objects under the tires of the buses, unknown to driver and conductor in charge.
The sharp object pierces the tyres to render the bus immovable, sometimes in the middle of a journey.
Mr. Afful believes the motive is to give the private operators monopoly in the carting of passengers and goods.
He said the incidents have been happening repeatedly at Bomfa in Ashanti, Sefwi Aseweneso, and Dwenase in the Eastern region and Dunkwaw in the central region.
“When the drivers park in the night to have some rest, before they get up at dawn, the metal object is put under the tire, and before they realize, the object has pierced the tire,” he said.
Mr Afful says the saboteurs use sharp boat, iron rods and nails on pieces of wood to perpetrate their acts.
According to him, numerous reports to the Police Motto Traffic and Transport Unit in the towns, the DCE and opinion leaders have yielded no result.
He said each tire cost GHc900, noting that replacing destroyed ones places a huge financial burden on the company’s finances.
Mr. Afful warned that company officials would have no option, under the circumstance, but to suspend service to communities where such acts persist.
