Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia received a rapturous reception from New Patriotic Party (NPP) faithful in his hometown, the Walewale Constituency, on Wednesday afternoon as part of his national campaign tour.
In a remarkable show of support, party members and supporters who packed the auditorium where Dr. Bawumia was scheduled to address them declined to be formally campaigned to, insisting they had already made up their minds to give him a resounding victory in January’s NPP presidential primaries.
Dr. Bawumia has been touring constituencies across the country ahead of the primaries, and Wednesday marked the start of his tour of the North East Region, following earlier visits to the Upper West and Upper East regions.
His visit to Walewale became an occasion for party faithful in his home constituency to reaffirm their unwavering support.
Even before his arrival, supporters were already in a celebratory mood, dancing to traditional music and specially composed songs in his honour.
There was near pandemonium when the former Vice President arrived and was formally welcomed to address the gathering, as he has done in other constituencies on his tour.
However, the highly charged supporters refused to allow Dr. Bawumia to go through the usual lengthy address or campaign speech, declaring that they were already committed to voting overwhelmingly in his favour and assuring him of total support.
Instead, the ecstatic crowd surrounded him, dancing and chanting his name in an open display of endorsement.
Amid the enthusiastic atmosphere, Dr. Bawumia managed to briefly address the gathering, speaking for less than a minute rather than his usual extended engagement.
He expressed gratitude to party members for their overwhelming show of support and their pledge to secure him an emphatic victory in the upcoming primaries.
