Government has handed over a newly constructed state of the art premix retail outlet to the fisher folks of Brawire in Axim-Western Region.This is in fulfillment of government's promise to the fisher folks to replace the burnt local premix loading point. In June 22, there was an explosion at the local premix retail point at Brawire in the Western Region which led to the death of more than 20 people and many others injured.The local premix retail outlet was unsafe and posed a danger to users, fisher folks and the the community. Following the explosion, government promised to replace all makeshift premix retail outlets in all 270 landing beaches along the coast of Ghana to boost the distribution of premix and make it safe for fisher folks.Construction of the modern retail outlet in Brawire, according to government, is the beginning of a massive plan for similar facilities in all fishing communities.The project is estimated to cost GHC180,000. It has fencing and other security features installed.At the commissioning, the Deputy Minister for Energy in charge of Petroleum and MP for Ellembelle, E.A. Kofi Buah assured fisher folks of government's commitment to improve their livelihood by injecting massive infrastructural investments such as the modern retail outlet, fishing habours and other modern fishing implements.The Deputy Managing Director of GOIL (operators of the modern retail outlet), Charles Darko, announced that yearly safety training programmes would be organized for the local handlers of premix to deepen their appreciation of all safety issues on the handling of petroleum products.For his part, the Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority, Alexander Mould, announced that the Authority is rolling out a number of programmes next year to monitor the distribution of petroleum products in the country.He mentioned the installation of electronic tracking devices on fuel tankers and the marking of petroleum products with invisible signatures among other measures to being rolled out to ensure that subsidized products are delivered to targeted groups.
