Morocco has reiterated its unwavering commitment to advancing joint African efforts in promoting peace, security, and sustainable development across the continent.
This reaffirmation came during the February 2025 African Union (AU) Summit, which focused on critical issues such as continental integration, health security, climate change, and leadership renewal at the AU Commission.
Notably absent from the summit’s agenda was the Moroccan Sahara issue, a development welcomed by Morocco and seen as a shift toward addressing Africa’s pressing priorities rather than political distractions.
The AU’s decision underscores its commitment to focusing on urgent matters that impact African citizens directly.
Morocco’s active participation at the summit was marked by significant contributions. During the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC) meeting at the level of Heads of State and Government, the Kingdom’s proposal for a humanitarian truce in Sudan during Ramadan was unanimously endorsed.
“This truce is vital for ensuring unhindered humanitarian aid to those affected,” Morocco emphasized. The Kingdom also pledged considerable support to bolster the continent’s health security during a high-level discussion on health financing.
Since rejoining the AU in 2017, Morocco has emerged as a key player, guided by the vision of King Mohammed VI.
Under his leadership, Morocco has driven initiatives in migration, climate resilience, and peacebuilding. In 2018, the AU designated King Mohammed VI as its Leader on Migration, with the African Migration Observatory established in Rabat.
His climate initiatives, launched at the 2016 African Summit for Action, continue to serve as a benchmark for Africa’s climate resilience strategies.
Morocco’s influence within the AU has been reinforced through its membership in the PSC for the 2018–2020 and 2022–2025 terms, holding the council’s chairmanship three times.
The Tangier Declaration, born from the Tangier Conference on Promoting Peace, Security, and Development, was unanimously endorsed by the AU Conference.
This milestone underscores Morocco’s commitment to addressing Africa’s peace and security challenges through an integrated approach that unites member states, financial bodies, UN agencies, and civil society.
Further cementing its role in Africa’s democratic advancement, Morocco has instituted specialized training programs for AU election observers.
Additionally, the Kingdom has secured key leadership roles within the AU, including the Director General position at the AU Commission (AUC), chairmanship of the Specialised Technical Committee on economic issues, and vice-chairmanship of bodies overseeing civil service, urban development, and environmental concerns.
Morocco’s longstanding historical ties to the AU—as one of its founding members—underscore its dedication to upholding the continent’s noble causes.
The Kingdom remains determined to strengthen the AU’s governance, foster comprehensive reforms, and champion Africa’s voice on the global stage.
Its efforts are rooted in the Royal Vision that places African citizens’ peace, security, and development at the heart of the pan-African agenda.
