Here's a list of movies to watch out for this summer.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon (June 29)
The Plot: In the third installment of Michael Bay's robotic franchise, hero Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) has a new girlfriend (recent Maxim Hot 100 list-topper Rosie Huntington-Whiteley) -- but not much else has changed: Sam and his buff buddy Maj. William Lennox (Josh Duhamel) must once again to team with Optimus Prime and the Autobots, this time to fend off a Decepticon attack on Chicago.
The Buzz: Bay has streamlined the plot to make this entry -- potentially LaBeouf's last -- more satisfying than the second Transformers flick, which was publicly lambasted by ex-star Megan Fox (which is probably why she's now ex-star Megan Fox). And thanks to the movie's eye-popping trailers, the franchise is looking (Optimus) primed for a comeback.
Larry Crowne (July 1)
The Plot: After getting laid off from his job, a middle-aged man (Tom Hanks) goes back to college to finish the degree he never got. While there, he forms an unlikely bond with his classmates and -- no shocker here -- crushes on his cranky professor (Julia Roberts).
The Buzz: Hanks and Roberts had high-wattage chemistry to spare as co-stars in 2007's Charlie Wilson's War, and they're sure to bring it again here. Adding to the film's allure? It's Hanks' first feature directorial effort since 1996's That Thing You Do! -- and he also co-wrote the screenplay!
Monte Carlo (July 1st)
Grace (Selena Gomez) is an ordinary girl who becomes an accidental princess when a family summer trip to Paris turns into the fantasy of a lifetime. Living like royalty, Grace, along with her two best friends (played by Gossip Girl actresses Leighton Meester and Katie Cassidy), discovers who she really is -- by assuming another person's identity.
Cars 2 (June 24)
The Plot: In the sequel to he 2006 hit, mechanical duo Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) and Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) take their show on the road to compete in the World Grand Prix -- only to have Mater get roped into an international spy mission.
The Buzz: Pixar films are practically synonymous with box-office success. Considering this one's predecessor -- which earned over $460 million worldwide -- was also nominated for a pair of Oscars, Cars 2 shouldn't be a tough sell.
Bad Teacher (June 24)
The Plot: A potty-mouthed, booze-swilling teacher (Cameron Diaz) sets her sights on bedding a hottie substitute (Justin Timberlake) by raising enough money to get a boob job. And that's where her students come in -- the educator with the highest class average gets a huge bonus.
The Buzz: With its gender role-reversal (it's nice to see the woman as the aggressor for a change) and the on-screen chemistry between former real-life flames Diaz and Timberlake, this promises to be an A+ study in comedic genius.
Horrible Bosses (July 8)
The Plot: Three working stiffs (Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis, and Charlie Day) figure that the only roadblocks in their lives are their miserable bosses (Kevin Spacey, Colin Farrell and Jennifer Aniston). So they decided to whack them, one at a time. Seriously.
The Buzz: Everyone from Vince Vaughn to Matthew McConaughey to Ashton Kutcher reportedly expressed interest in starring in Bosses, considered one of the most hotly anticipated comedies of the year.
One Day (July 8)
The Plot: A working-class gal named Emma (Anne Hathaway) and a womanizing guy named Dex (Jim Sturgess) hook up on the night of their college graduation, then move on with life. One Day checks in on them once a year for the next two decades, chronicling the strength of their enduring bond.
The Buzz: Based on the best-selling book by David Nicholls (who also wrote the screenplay), this sweet little indie -- which gives Hathaway the opportunity to flaunt her dramatic chops and her British accent -- could be the perfect antidote to the season's big-budget blockbusters.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 (July 15)
The Plot: The epic fantasy series comes to a close with this eighth installment, in which Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Hermione (Emma Watson) and Ron (Rupert Grint) hunt down the Horcruxes and face off against the vile Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) and his minions in the epic Battle of Hogwarts.
The Buzz: Whether or not you know the plot's outcome (chances are you do) shouldn't matter -- it's the journey that has always made J.K. Rowling's tales so compelling. There is still Ron and Hermione's first kiss to see, a Voldemort-Potter showdown to be had (complete with a chase scene not featured in the book!), valiant sacrifices to be made and tears to be shed as we bid adieu to the fantasy series that has, for an entire decade, enchanted kids and adults alike
Friends With Benefits (July 22)
The Plot: A headhunter (Mila Kunis) hooks up with an employee (Justin Timberlake), but decides to keep it strictly physical for, you know, professional reasons. Needless to say, their agreement doesn’t work out as planned.
The Buzz: Friends made a splash back in late 2010 with its playful, raunchy red-band trailer. In fact, the effortless repartee between Kunis and Timberlake was so compelling that it left people speculating whether the duo were a real couple off-screen. Though the film's a bit reminiscent of this winter's similarly-themed No Strings Attached (starring Kunis' pal and Black Swan costar Natalie Portman), something tells us the Mila-Justin pairing won't have a problem putting butts in theater seats.
Captain America: The First Avenger (July 22)
The Plot: Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) volunteers to let the government transform him into a superpowered, Nazi-fighting soldier. Public enemy No. 1? Hitler's fearsome weapons genius, the Red Skull (Hugo Weaving).
The Buzz: The trailer, which shows off the digital wizardry employed to turn a pre-superheroic Evans into a scrawny weakling, has won over any naysayers. That's great news, seeing as the success of Captain is even more crucial than it at first seems: In addition to kicking off its own possible franchise, the movie presages the Avengers, DC Comics' ensemble superhero flick set to hit theaters next summer.
Crazy, Stupid, Love. (July 29)
The Plot: A lothario (Ryan Gosling) schools a square, suburban dad (Steve Carell) in the nuances of modern dating after he finds out that his wife (Julianne Moore) is cheating on him.
The Buzz: We already know Carell is well-versed at playing the hapless schmuck (see The 40-Year Old Virgin), so the curiosity here is Gosling: He's made audiences swoon by playing conflicted romantics, but can he meet-cute with the quick-witted Emma Stone in a rom-com? Judging by the trailer, that answer is a resounding "Yes!"
Cowboys & Aliens (July 29)
The Plot: A cowboy with a case of amnesia (Daniel Craig) teams with a rival (Harrison Ford) and a prospector (Olivia Wilde) when extraterrestrials invade their Old West town.
The Buzz: The plot may sound absurd, but the blockbuster cast and proven director -- Iron Man’s Jon Favreau -- bode well for this less-goofy-than-you-think event movie. Plus, it's James Bond and Indiana Jones together in the same flick. Who doesn't want to see that?
The Change-Up (Aug. 5)
The Plot: It’s Freaky Friday for the suburban male set, when a married guy (Jason Bateman) mysteriously switches bodies with his womanizing best friend (Ryan Reynolds) after a drunken night out.
The Buzz: The seemingly stale premise gets a whole lot more interesting once you consider that Change-Up was written by The Hangover scribes John Lucas and Scott Moore, directed by Wedding Crashers helmer David Dobkin, and will be rated a hard R.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes (Aug. 5)
The Plot: A prequel to the classic Charlton Heston flick, Rise of the Planet of the Apes chronicles how a geneticist's (James Franco) experiments on apes result in a new race of super-intelligent simians bent on overthrowing humankind.
The Buzz: Tim Burton's 2001 reboot of the franchise was met with middling reviews. But no mind: Anything the eccentric Franco attaches himself to these days comes front-loaded with curiosity -- especially when the film's lead ape is played by Andy Serkis, a.k.a. Lord of the Rings’ Gollum, via performance-capture technology.
The Help (Aug. 12)
The Plot: In 1960s Mississippi, three women -- two African-American maids (Doubt's Viola Davis and Ugly Betty's Octavia Spencer) and one white college student (Emma Stone) -- flout racial bias to form a powerful friendship, as she documents black women's stories of discrimination.
The Buzz: A proven comedienne, "It Girl" Stone (who appears in no less than three movies this summer -- Crazy, Stupid, Love., Friends With Benefits and The Help) will instead test her dramatic mettle in this adaptation of Kathryn Stockett's weighty, acclaimed book.
Our Idiot Brother (Aug. 26)
The Plot: After stupidly selling marijuana to a uniformed cop, a kindhearted organic farmer (Paul Rudd) loses his home and his girlfriend. Left for broke, he must rely on the kindness of his fed-up sisters (Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel and Emily Mortimer) to get his life back on track.
The Buzz: Nice-guy Rudd as a lovable loser? Stranger transformations have occured on screen. But this being the unassuming Rudd, audiences will be rooting for him.
Green Lantern (June 17)
The Plot: Cocksure test pilot Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds) is given a magical ring by a group of intergalactic beings sworn to protect the universe. With moral support from his childhood love (Blake Lively), he comes to understand his limitless powers and battle an untold evil.
The Buzz: While many have admired Reynold's Brad Pitt-esque abs -- and most of his other exposure has come from being (the now former) Mr. Scarlett Johannson -- he's yet to prove himself as a big-budget leading man. This is his chance.
The Hangover: Part II (May 26)
The Plot: The Wolf Pack (Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis and Ed Helms) travels to Thailand to watch Stu (Helms) get hitched -- and somehow manage to lose his future brother-in-law, as well as their memories of the previous night. What happened is still hazy, but the clues are nothing short of intriguing: a tattoo artist, a monkey and a monastery that looks like a P.F. Chang's.
The Buzz: The film's various controversies -- aborted cameos from Mel Gibson and Liam Neeson, a trailer hastily yanked from theaters for being too lewd, director Todd Phillips angering PETA after joking that the monkey was a chain-smoker -- have only stoked the anticipation for this (hopefully) delightfully twisted movie.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (May 20)
The Plot: The fourth installment of the Disney franchise finds ethically challenged Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) in hot pursuit of the Fountain of Youth. But he also finds time to flirt/spar with the fetching Angelica (Penélope Cruz), daughter of the storied pirate Blackbeard (Deadwood’s Ian McShane), who, incidentally, is also in search of that aforementioned eternal life-giving fountain.
The Buzz: The paparazzi were all over this Pirates shoot like Jack Sparrow on guyliner, trying to spot Cruz's baby bump. In fact, by the end of the three-month shoot, Cruz's look-alike sister Monica reportedly stepped in as a body double to throw paps off the scent. That drama aside, filmmakers were able to keep the lid on the film's top-secret plot twists. But we do know that this time around there will be zombies and maneating mermaids!
