The Public Relations Officer of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit of the Ghana Police Service, Inspector Simon Tenku is appealing to political leaders to include road safety messages in their political campaign in the upcoming 2012 general elections. According to him, the political leaders’ involvement in the road safety campaign will help curb the rampant road accidents being witnessed in the country. He said during the political seasons a lot of people get involve so the road safety campaign message can best reach the public if channeled through political leaders. According to research, Ghana loses an amount of GH¢165,000 annually, representing 1.6 percent of GDP through road accidents. In spite of the relentless effort by the nation, road accident is on the increase, claiming many lives. Speaking on Asempa FM’s social programme Neamenim on Friday, Inspector Simon Tenku noted that in spite of a huge resources channeled into road safety campaign by the nation, road accident is on the increase but believes political leaders’ involvement will help the situation. “This year is an election year and a lot of people would be involved so we are appealing to our political leaders to make road safety campaign paramount in their campaign messages. This will help drive the road safety campaign faster to the people and I believe that the rampant road accidents being witnessed annually will reduce dramatically”. Delivering the road accident statistics for 2011, he said road accident for the year increased vis-a-vis the previous year. “The year 2011 saw a lot of massive road accident where the MTTU recorded 13,572 accidents which claimed 2,230 lives”. Inspector Tenku attributed many road accidents to negligence on the part of drivers and the public who normally look down on road safety regulations. He stressed that festive seasons also bring about accidents. “You could realize that the many road accidents we witness are during the first quarter of the year where there is Easter and at the last quarter of the year where there is Christmas”. The MTTU Public Relations Officer asserted that indiscipline on the part of passengers and drivers also cause road accidents. “We have a difficult situation where passengers tell drivers to drive above their limit which leads to many innocent souls to be killed and others become vulnerable”. He asked every well meaning Ghanaian to get involved in the road safety campaign in order to drive away the numerous carnage on the road. Inspector Tenku further entreated drivers to abide by the road safety regulations in order to make 2012 road accidents free.
