National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Youth Working Committee Chairman, Okai Mintah, says the party is well positioned to reclaim the Bimbilla parliamentary seat in the 2028 general elections.

Mr Mintah said a stronger grassroots structure and sustained mobilisation of young people would be central to the NDC’s efforts to defeat the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the constituency.

Addressing branch youth organisers in Bimbilla, he said the party’s Youth Wing would intensify its engagement with young voters and strengthen its presence at the branch level.

“Bimbilla is coming back to the NDC, and we are going to make that happen through a stronger, more organised and more purposeful Youth Wing,” he said.

Mr Mintah argued that the youth remain a critical force in Ghana’s electoral politics and must therefore be given a central role in the party’s grassroots organisation and mobilisation efforts.

He said the NDC could not afford to leave its electoral fortunes to chance, stressing the need for continuous engagement with party members rather than limiting mobilisation to election periods.

The Bimbilla seat has traditionally been competitive, although the NPP has maintained control of the constituency in recent elections.

In the 2024 parliamentary election, NPP candidate Dominic Nitiwul retained the seat with 34,582 votes, representing 54.08 per cent, while the NDC’s Joseph Kwabena Manboah-Rockson polled 29,364 votes, or 45.92 per cent.

Mr Mintah said the relatively narrow margin showed that the NDC remained capable of reclaiming the seat with improved organisation and mobilisation.

“The numbers tell us something very important: Bimbilla is not beyond our reach. The gap has narrowed, and with disciplined organisation, aggressive grassroots engagement and a Youth Wing that is fully mobilised, we can cross the line. We are going to take Bimbilla back,” he said.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Nanumba North, Abdul Samed Hamza, also welcomed the call for stronger grassroots organisation, saying the NDC’s improved performance in the constituency provided a basis for the party to build on ahead of 2028.

He urged branch youth organisers to remain disciplined and focused while working to strengthen the party’s structures.

Mr Mintah said his proposed approach to youth mobilisation would go beyond election-year activities, with the party expected to maintain a permanent engagement with young people throughout the political cycle.

He said empowering branch-level structures and ensuring that young party members remained actively involved would be key to building a stronger electoral base for the NDC.

The engagement formed part of Mr Mintah’s consultations with grassroots youth structures as he prepares to contest the NDC National Youth Organiser position when nominations open.
