The Majority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has dismissed the National Democratic Congress's (NDC) objection to a mandamus application filed by four New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidates.
According to him, the Electoral Commission (EC) was already addressing the disputed results in four constituencies through administrative processes.
Speaking after the High Court set January 1, 2025, to rule on the NDC’s objection, Mr Afenyo-Markin noted that the EC had explained earlier that there were irregularities in collation which led to the declared results in Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, Tema Central and Dome Kwabenya.
“The EC itself has stated emphatically that there was no earlier valid declaration of results in these constituencies. The argument that results were declared is neither here nor there,” he said.
Afenyo-Markin highlighted the significance of the ongoing legal process, contrasting it with what he described as the NDC’s initial response to the disputed results.
“At least, we’ve managed to bring them to civility in the courtroom. We believe in the rule of law and are confident in the outcome,” he said.
The NPP candidates’ mandamus application seeks to compel the EC to complete its collation and declaration of results, a process the EC had already planned to redo administratively.
The High Court’s ruling on January 1, 2025, will decide whether it can proceed to hear the mandamus application or dismiss it based on the NDC’s objection.
