The Acting Director-General of the Ghana Police Service’s Public Affairs Directorate has indicated that the current police administration led by Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare is determined to clamp down corrupt practices.

According to ACP Kwesi Ofori, this new wave already being felt is to ensure Ghana becomes great and strong.

He told Samson Lardy Anyenini on Newsfile that one of the corrupt practices the police is keen to end is giving and receiving of bribes by motorists and police officers.

“We are aspiring to make our nation great and strong. The giver and taker should be punished by law. I believe that the law has spoken well of it. Looking at what is happening in the police, our new IGP has rolled out so many programmes. He noted anti corruption is one of his visions to ensure we detach ourselves from such unholy practices.

"I can assure you that the new wave in the police service is trying to beat down and do away with corrupt practices. And the IGP is very stern on it, members of the police administration are committed to it."

The Director General of the Public Affairs Directorate therefore appealed to the Ghanaian populace to support the work of the police service in restoring its honour.

"We need to support the new administration to ensure that we weed out corruption and its traits within the service and stay more focused in security delivery and excellence."

Bearing witness to the era of law and order was acting Chairman of the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO), Sheikh Armiyawo Shaibu, who lauded Dr Akuffo Ampare for the good work being done.

Speaking on the show, he stated that the adherence to road safety regulations have been strengthened under IGP Dampare's tenure of office.

"I have seen policemen at traffic lights compelling motorbikes to stop at red lights contrary to the previous practice where we see even in the presence of the police, Okada riders with impunity would be driving across the red light to the risk of other road users," he said.

Recently, 28-year-old Kofi Buckman was apprehended by the police for recklessly driving a grey Mercedes Benz at the Airport junction off the 37- Legon road in Accra.

He was filmed drifting dangerously under a traffic light that had signaled motorists to stop on Saturday, October 23.

On Monday, October 25, Mr Buckman was to appear before the court but reports reveal that he was unable to.

According to the Police, he fell sick after he was granted bail, hence could not appear before the court.
