Professor Dominic Fobih, newly appointed Minister of Education, Science and Sports on Thursday toured the Ohene Djan Stadium in Accra which currently under renovation to acquaint himself with the progress of work at the venue.
Accra sports stadium which is one of the four venues earmarked to host the Ghana 2008 Africa Cup of Nation, has been expanded to meet the 40,000 capacity required by the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF).
Prof. Fobih who was accompanied by his deputy, Mr Osei Bonsu Amoah and Magnus Rex Danquah, Chief Operating Officer of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) were conducted round the stadium by Stuart Ward, Project Manager of Micheleti and Co Ghana Limited, contractors working on the project.
At the end of the about one and a half hour tour, the minister expressed satisfaction of progress made on the stadium and affirmed his confidence in the ability of the contractors to beat the deadline.
Prof. Fobih said the project if completed would become one of the largest stadiums in the country, an indication of the government's preparedness to develop sports infrastructure in the country.
The minister however noted that the beautiful edifice can only be given a crowning moment if the Black Stars are able to win the competition.
He said the ministry would therefore do everything possible to support the preparations of the team ahead of the competition to enable them achieve the desired result.
The contractors, Micheleti and Co Ghana Limited are expected to complete the renovation exercise by October 31, 2007.
The Stadium, according to the contractors will take a good shape by the first and second week of October and will be handed over to the government by the end of the month.
Prof. Fobih and his delegation also visited the training grounds in the Metropolis earmarked to support the competition.
