The impending rainy season will not shore up the water level of the Akosombo dam, predict weather forecasters.
This news will disappoint many Ghanaians whose hopes are that there should be more rain to salvage the ailing Akosombo dam as well as ease the energy crisis.
Speaking to Joy News, a Weather Forecaster at the Meteorological Department in Accra, Mr. Anthony Sewornuku, says for the water level in the Akosombo dam to increase, there is the need for at least two major rainy seasons this year.
“The deficit in the dam is not just by one rainfall season. We need two or three good rainfall season to make any significant impact in the Volta lake level. A seasonal rainfall however good it might be can not take us out of the problem but can only ameliorate it… It is not looking good at the moment but we pray our fears are not buttressed by what is happening over the eastern pacific,” he said.
Mr. Sewornuku says the country’s rainfall pattern faces a major threat from a weather condition called El Nino. This is an abnormal warming of the Pacific Ocean, which can lead to severe weather conditions. He says if the El Nino persists, rainfall this year could decline.
“The fear is that abnormal sea surface temperatures over the eastern pacific are quite high… it normally disturbs the general wind circulation and affects the rainfall pattern over West Africa and Ghana inclusive,” he said.
