Over one hundred constituency and polling station women organisers of the New Patriotic Party in the Greater Accra region, Tuesday morning, paid a courtesy call on Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to throw their support behind his candidature in the run-up to the 18th October presidential primary of the party.
Led by Madam Akosua Takyiwaa, the Women’s Organiser for the Okaikoi North constituency, the delegates were met by Nana Akufo-Addo, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, his running mate for the 2008 and 2012 elections, and Alhaji Moctar Bamba, former National Organiser of the NPP, who had also cone to visit Nana Akufo-Addo.
Reading a solidarity message on behalf of the women’s wing, Madam Christina Nkansah, the Women’s Organiser from the La Dadekotopon constituency, stated emphatically that they had resolved to support the candidature of Nana Akufo-Addo, adding that “we would fight tooth and nail for you to win the primaries and subsequently power from the John Mahama-led NDC government.”
Citing reasons for their support of Nana Akufo-Addo, Madam Nkansah explained that the decision by Nana Akufo-Addo to contest the presidential primary of the NPP was a show of total commitment to the development of the country.
According to her, the women’s wing of the party have come to the realisation that in the face of extreme vilification by some persons, both within and outside of the party, Nana Akufo-Addo “stood firm without looking back. Your commitment to the course of the advancement of the party has remained unshaken.”
“Amongst all your peers, you stand tall in popularity and depth of knowledge in issues of governance. The maturity you exhibited after the historic trial challenging the result of the 2012 general elections held the country. Even though the verdict contradicted the logical expectations of many who understand legal procedures and principles you ended up accepting the verdict,” the message read.
It is against this background, Madam Nkansah noted, that the women’s wing of the NPP are backing the candidature of Nana Akufo-Addo.
“We declare that there is no other person in the party that has the popularity you have to lead us into the 2016 general elections, if we really hope to wrestle power from the NDC who have ruined the economy and have destroyed the core foundation of the development of our dear country,” she added.
Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, who also addressed the women, welcomed their decision to back Nana Akufo-Addo, stating that this was a clear indication of victory in the upcoming presidential primary and in the 2016 election.
On his part, Nana Akufo-Addo thanked the women’s wing for the “overwhelming support” they have given him ahead of the 18th October primary. He assured them that when he wins the nomination of the party for the 2016 election, nothing short of victory shall be the portion of the NPP.
Akufo-Addo also admonished all NPP members to conduct themselves in a manner that will give Ghanaians the confidence to entrust, once again, the mandate of leadership into the hands of the party.
According to him, Ghanaians are praying for the return of the NPP into office, as the state of the nation under the leadership of the John Mahama-led NDC government is nothing to write home about and keeps worsening by the day.
The women organisers also used the opportunity to present 10 cartons of bottled water to Nana Akufo-Addo for use in refreshing guests who call on him at his Nima residence.
