Parliament has approved a GH¢1.2 billion allocation for the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, paving the way for significant advancements in Ghana’s renewable energy sector.
The funding, approved for the 2025 fiscal year, will support key initiatives to improve electricity distribution and promote a sustainable energy future.
According to the Ministry’s objectives for 2025, one million smart meters will be procured and installed in operational areas under the Programme for Results policy.
The move is expected to enhance efficiency and service delivery in the electricity distribution sector.
The Ministry also plans to introduce private sector participation in the sector, which will likely bring in fresh expertise and investment.
Furthermore, the Accra-Kumasi transmission line project is set to commence, promising improved power supply reliability between the two major cities.
In line with Ghana’s commitment to achieving net-zero energy-related carbon emissions by 2060, the Government Goes Solar project will be implemented to promote clean and sustainable energy solutions.
The initiative aligns with the country’s Energy Transition Framework, which aims to deploy low-carbon solutions across key sectors of the economy.
The 2025 Budget Statement and Economic Policy of the government was presented to Parliament by Dr. Caasiel Ato Forson, the Minister of Finance on Tuesday, March 11 on the theme: “Resetting Ghana for the Economy We Want.”
The comment on the budget ended on Tuesday March 25 2025 following the Majority and Minority Leader’s comments.
